Vandals scrawl ‘serial rapist’ on Bill Cosby’s star on Hollywood Walk of Fame Authorities are investigating the vandalism of Bill Cosby’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame after it was marked with the words “serial rapist.” (KTLA) Los Angeles police are investigating the vandalism of disgraced comedian Bill Cosby’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame after it was marked with the words “serial rapist,” authorities said. LAPD officials learned someone had scrawled the words in black marker on the star about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. It is not clear when the message was written, said Officer Mike Lopez. Authorities cleaned the plaque and reported the vandalism, Lopez said. Cosby, 81, once known as “America’s dad” for his role on the sitcom “The Cosby Show,” was convicted in April of drugging and molesting Andrea Constand, a former basketball official at Temple University, in 2004 in Philadelphia. He is expected to be sentenced Sept. 24. Cosby was given a star on the Walk of Fame in November 1977, according to the Walk of Fame’s website, which highlights his television and stand-up comedy career and calls him a “sought-after spokesman.” Tuesday’s incident isn’t the first time his star has been defaced. The word “rapist” was written across Cosby’s star three times in marker in 2014 amid mounting allegations from multiple women that he sexually assaulted them decades ago. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has said it will not remove stars of controversial public figures such as Cosby.
“This is no different than our national discourse, but this is one principal who is not going to stand for it,” Bishop told The Times on Sunday. The enrollment at Santa Ana High is almost 99% Latino; Aliso Niguel’s student body is majority white. Bishop’s posts sparked much debate over the weekend about what exactly happened. Some Aliso Niguel supporters said that Bishop unfairly maligned the school and that the students’ behavior was not racist. Others declared it a misunderstanding, saying some students arrived at the game in patriotic colors to commemorate the anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. “We are a multi-cultural school. Sure do we have outliers just as your school does? Sure, but for you to call our school a racist school is horrible to do to our students and our players,” one Aliso Niguel supporter commented on Bishop’s post. The principal began the social media storm by commending his team, which played hard in a 42-21 defeat. “It would have been easy to blame the racist welcome the ‘Saints’ received as they walked into the stadium and read the posters referencing — Trump, ‘We love White,’ ‘Build the Wall’ and various other politically and racially-charged statements,” he posted after the game.

Mychal Kendricks: Super Bowl winner facing up to 25 years in jail Kendricks won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles last season Super Bowl-winning linebacker Mychal Kendricks is facing up to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of insider trading. Prosecutors said Kendricks made around $1.2m (£0.92m) over two years working with a former Goldman Sachs analyst. Kendricks, 27, admitted that he swapped cash, NFL tickets and access to parties for market-shifting information. He won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles last season before joining the Cleveland Brown in June. Cleveland terminated his one-year, $2.25, (£1.74m) contract on 29 August, hours after the charges were announced. At the time, Kendricks released a statement in which he said he “deeply regretted” becoming involved with “a former friend of mine who I thought I could trust”. He added: “Four years ago, I participated in insider trading. The Soviets, Beschloss said, “basically kept the meter running and didn’t do anything. “[Then-Secretary of State Henry] Kissinger later wrote that the Soviets treated Nixon with the solicitude they would devote to someone who is terminally ill,” Beschloss continued. “Trump is not at that point, but it’s always a consideration for foreign leaders. If another leader is negotiating with Trump, they have to factor in that he may lose the House and even have a smaller chance of lasting a full term.” According to Woodward’s new book, one foreign leader was already expressing concerns in July 2017 about the cloud of investigations over Trump’s presidency. “Donald, I’m worried about this investigation. Trump’s continued popularity among Republicans and his administration’s achievements on party priorities — from tax cuts to the rollback of regulations and appointment of a record number of conservative judges to the federal bench — have helped the president keep most Republican lawmakers from leaving him.

(Gabriel S. Scarlett / Los Angeles Times) They’ve been crammed into toilets, tossed off balconies and set on fire. They’ve even been adorned with dangling bags of dog droppings. As cities like Santa Monica and Beverly Hills struggle to control a rapid proliferation of electric pay-per-minute scooters, some residents are taking matters into their own hands and waging a guerrilla war against the devices. These vandals are destroying or desecrating the vehicles in disturbingly imaginative ways, and celebrating their illegal deeds on social media — in full view of authorities and the public. “They throw them everywhere: in the ocean, in the sand, in the trash can,” said Robert Johnson Bey, a Venice Beach maintenance worker who regularly comes across scooter parts on the Venice Beach boardwalk, Speedway and adjoining alleys. “Sunday, I was finding kickstands everywhere,” Bey said. “Looked like they were snapped off.” A post shared by Bird Graveyard (@birdgraveyard) on The vandalism echoes a rash of pellet-gun attacks on so-called Google buses in the Bay Area and appears to be motivated in part by resentment over the increasing presence of tech corporations along the Southern California coast — what is now dubbed Silicon Beach. But unlike the attacks on buses that ferry workers to their Google and Apple offices, the scooter destruction has elicited little sympathy or outrage — to say nothing of criminal investigations. The Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Division has received just one report of scooter vandalism that resulted in an arrest, but the case was rejected by the prosecutor.
Modern hunters though aim to kill the animal instantly, usually with an exploding harpoon, but conservations argue it can still take very long for a whale to die. Two years ago the Australian government released graphic footage from 2008 showing a Japanese research ship harpooning a whale which activist group Sea Shepherd said took more than 20 minutes to die. “And that’s not to mention that they are killing them with their family members, with their pods having to witness their family members screaming out in pain,” says Jeff Hansen, managing director of Sea Shepherd in Australia. Those in favour of whaling say such cases are exceptions – accidents that also happen in any abattoir. Yet their main point is that they argue that opposition to sustainable whaling of non-endangered stocks is deeply hypocritical. Image caption Sustainable whaling is no less moral that commercial farming, say pro-whaling groups Industrial meat production keeps pigs, cows and chicken in grim captivity from birth to slaughterhouse, but this seldom stops shoppers from reaching for a nice cut of pork or beef. There is also the hunter’s defence that killing a wild animal is more ethical than raising an animal in captivity with the sole purpose of eating it. Lars Walloe, former head of Norway’s delegation to the IWC, told the BBC whaling is the same as killing “other large mammals in the forest, like deer, elk, moose”. “We kill them for meat and we don’t see the difference between killing a minke whale and a moose as long as it’s done humanely.” Leading anti-whaling nations like Australia have already said they would band together to reject any attempts to undermine the current ban. Australia has long been Japan’s major opponent when it comes to whaling and wants to strengthen the IWC’s protection of whales.

Why then did James Comey, then the F.B.I. director, also introduce the so-called Steele dossier? “It would be as if I had reported and written one of the most serious, complex stories for The Washington Post that I had ever done,” Woodward writes, “and then provided an appendix of unverified allegations. Oh, by the way, here is a to-do list for further reporting and we’re publishing it.” There is a strong sense here of the clock ticking. John M. Dowd, Trump’s former lawyer, does not think Trump is mentally capable of testifying to the special counsel. “Don’t testify,” he is quoted as saying. “It’s either that or an orange jump suit.” Trump declined to be interviewed for this book, Woodward writes in a note to readers. But the book’s title is from a quote Trump delivered in a 2016 interview with Woodward and his Washington Post colleague Robert Costa: “Real power is — I don’t even want to use the word — fear.” If this book has a single point to drive home, it is that the president of the United States is a congenital liar. I wish “Fear” had other points to make. I wanted more context, more passion, a bit of irony and certainly more simple history.

Ida Lewis was keeper of the Lime Rock Lighthouse in Newport, Rhode Island. Her father became keeper of the lighthouse in 1854 and Ida Lewis took over the running of it – in 1879 – after her father, and later her mother, died. By the time she became keeper, she had gained a reputation for boldly rowing into stormy seas to rescue sailors in distress – saving more than a dozen people over the years, possibly as many as 25. She made her first rescue as a young teenager, and her heroism made national headlines in 1869 when she saved two soldiers from drowning. Accounts from the time say Ida was woken at dawn by her mother’s concern for the two men. She jumped out of bed, and in only a light dress, launched her boat and rowed out to the two men who were shocked to find themselves being rescued by a girl. The Globe has reached out to editorial boards nationwide to write and publish editorials on Aug. 16 denouncing what the newspaper called a ‘‘dirty war against the free press.’’ As of Friday, Pritchard, who oversees the Globe’s editorial page, said about 70 outlets had committed to editorials so far, with the list expected to grow. The publications ranged from large metropolitan dailies, such as the Houston Chronicle, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Miami Herald, and Denver Post, to small weekly papers with circulations as low as 4,000. An afternoon recap of the day’s most important business news, delivered weekdays. Thank you for signing up! Sign up for more newsletters here The newspaper’s request was being promoted by industry groups such as the American Society of News Editors and regional groups like the New England Newspaper and Press Association. It suggested editorial boards take a common stand against Trump’s words regardless of their politics, or whether they generally editorialized in support of or in opposition to the president’s policies. ‘‘Our words will differ. But at least we can agree that such attacks are alarming,’’ the appeal said, acknowledging that newspapers were likely to take different approaches. Pritchard said the decision to seek the coordinated response from newspapers was reached after Trump appeared to step up his rhetoric in recent weeks.

Flying down a hill on my bike I was not a boy on a bicycle, I was a starship commander hurtling through the stars or an Air Force pilot coming in low over Hanoi. Autumn was my favorite season to be out on the streets. Burning sunsets.
